It's the people that make them stay.
Let's be direct, because it's the question underneath every other question.
You don't have to farm. Nobody's going to hand you a hoe or put you on a compost rotation. The farm is staffed, professional, and independent, and it runs at five in the morning whether you're awake or not.
What Hickory Run asks is different: that you show up for the festival. Meet a friend at the cafe. Shop the market. Know the names of the people three doors down. Come to the event in the barn even when you're tired.
And you do not have to arrive with anyone. Plenty of people here won't have. A place built around a table, a market, and a green is a place where showing up alone on a Saturday is the most ordinary thing in the world.
By neighbors you haven't met yet.
Lambing. The first CSA boxes. The orchard in bloom and the whole place smelling like it. The market opens in April along the old drive.
Tuesday sheep on the greens. Weddings in the flower field. The market at its loudest. Long evenings on the commons.
Harvest festivals. The vineyard. Field days and sheepdog trials. Hayrides at Halloween, horse-drawn, for anyone who wants one.
Sleigh rides. Classes in the barn. Long meals. Seed catalogs and next year planned out loud.
A class series runs year-round in the barn: cooking a whole meal from whatever turned up in this week's CSA, harvesting honey, keeping chickens, canning and preserving veggies and fruit, drying herbs, arranging flowers, watching how a blacksmith changes the shoes on the draft horses ... all taught by the people who do it for a living, just a short walk from your home, year round.
These are the skills that used to be shared between neighbors, or taught by grandparents. Nobody expects you to learn all of them. Take the two that interest you and skip the rest. You'll still end up in a barn full of people learning something none of them would have figured out alone.
Life happens in the experiences we have. It might as well happen where you live.
A short note each season: what's growing, what's being built, and when you can come see it.
